Do People Read the Qur’an?

I just can’t stop wondering about this while I’m working.  I’ve seen so many comments and actions in TV, magazines, blogs (e.g. Indonesia Matters) on how and what moslem should do in cases.  And after reading the comments, do they ever open the Qur’an, at least, to see what is in it?

Qur’an is the ‘map’ to happiness on earth and after life.  A moslem should do things based on what is written in the Qur’an, NOT other books or writings, because nobody can write anything compared to the Qur’an, as being stated:

[2.23] And if you are in doubt as to that which We have revealed to Our servant, then produce a chapter like it and call on your witnesses besides Allah if you are truthful.
[2.24] But if you do (it) not and never shall you do (it), then be on your guard against the fire of which men and stones are the fuel; it is prepared for the unbelievers.

When I open up and try to read the Qur’an, I found out lots of things that those who say they are moslems do not do, and also found things that moslems do  but not written in the Qur’an.  That realy intrigues me, and shocked me at the moment.  The five times prayers and the way it is being done.  The 2.5% of zakat.  Sacrificing cows, sheep, etc.  Hajj.  Fasting.  All that has been given to me, totally became wrong when I relate it back to what I’ve read.

The more I read it, the more I find controversy with how things has been done by the moslems in Indonesia and around the world.  How so many people mix what they call ’sharia’ with what has been told by God in the Qur’an.  The more I read it, the more I understand that Islam makes so much sense and it is the people that corrupt the teaching of Islam for their political benefit.

How many people on earth, or say, in Jakarta that has the same thinking as I do?  I found a person who often writes in ‘Indonesia Matters’ who, I think, has the same opinion with me when it comes to Qur’an, and just the Qur’an for moslems.  But I really want to know how many people really embrace Islam as their way of life just purely based on the Qur’an, no hadits, no other books or tapes written by some ulama or pop-stars (pop stars like Aa Gym…he’s good, but to me, he is just a celebrity!).

People that only follow what has been said in the Qur’an are the true moslems, the fundamentalist.   Not those that bombs and terror others.  And so far, I haven’t seen many fundamentalists on earth!

dude, if Islam guy really READ the Koran, there will be only two probability based on their psychology: (1)they will become Murtadin, or (2)they will become Terrorist. So better they don’t read it at all…. Sorry my English sucks

  2. Flying Spaghetti: I hope you have opened the Qur’an. Don’t you think the opposite might be the issue: they don’t read the Qur’an, instead, they prefer reading the manmade hadits, therefore they become radical?

In reality almost all Muslims around the world hate the Quran and none of them observe their way of life as prescribed by the Quran. I have been trying to cultivate the idea for Muslims to read the Quran for more than 15 years, unfortunately I only could see strong resistence from them. It seems that it is beyond our power to change the mindset and attitute of the Muslims about their hatred towards the Quranic teachings. This is due to their love of the teachings from “Books” authored by men of religion. I kept saying they should measure these books against the Quranic injunctions, because that is what the Quran is about. It is the criteria between the right and wrong.

Anyway, I have abandoned the idea of telling the Muslims to read the book because they have chosen to uphold the religion of their forefathers. According to the Quran, the Intelligent Design who created us will auger us to the direction of our own choice or our initial decision in trusting the revealed book. Since it is the Intelligent Design who created the Law of Physic, everything in existance functions according to that law. We must first give before we get or we must trust the book before we can believe.

People may claim they believe the Intelligent Design, the Message bearers, the Revealed Books, all the Created Energies, and Eternal Life – but only a small fractions of the sincerely believe them, but the rest use this utterances as lip servcie only to deceive mankind.

  4. Asslamu Alaikum Sister parvita,

Interesting thoughts but I also would like you to see these videos about criticisms of the Hadith. The lecture is done by a professor at Brown University and I think he’s a Muslim.
