The Gym: the inconsiderate, annoying, B/SOB
Some annoying things in the gym usually doesn’t come from the gym itself, but from the other member of the gym. It is great to see lots of people are conscious about their health now, but it is grim to see their mental and their inconsiderate attitudes, which, to some extent, really gets to my nerves. You expect those who are the members in the gym are quite educated and, at least, middle class citizen. Unfortunately, Indonesians should be taught or told on how to behave in the gym.
-
Those who doesn’t wipe their sweat: This is pretty disgusting and annoying. Looking at a machine, wet with sweat is not something that I like to see. It is still fluid from your body, what is the sweat in wiping your sweat?
-
Those who doesn’t share the machine: This should be an ethical code I thought everybody knew, but apparently not. Usually, when I am using a machine and somebody approaches, I ask him/her, “Wanna share?”, then we swap after one set. I have already found lots of members, especially woman, who rest on the machine after each set, although she knows somebody is standing right next to her waiting. Usually, the rest should be around a minute before continuing the next set, but sometimes it takes forever for them (don’t they read how to train?). I find this very inconsiderate. When I was in the States, where the gym is packed, almost everybody knows this code. Here, even if you stand in front of the person, she will just ignore you. And when I ask, “Can we share?”, they will look at you and say, “I’m not done”. Usually, if the person doesn’t know this code after couple of minutes waiting, I just leave and use another machine. And you know what, after 5 minutes, this person is still, STILL, just monopolizing the machine!
-
Those who doesn’t return the weights : There is a big writing on the mirror of the gym that says, “If you are strong enough to lift the weight, you are strong enough to put me back”. Somehow, not everybody has the attitude of returning the weights to the place. Inconsiderate.
-
Those who make loud sounds when they do weights: Usually those group of narcist men do this. I mean, I’m also concentrating here…what are you trying to say, like, “Look at me, I’m strong!”? If it is only like the last counts, and not too loud, that’s tolerable, but when they are loud that the whole gym can hear him, I mean, really ‘kampungan’ (can’t find the right word in English).
-
Those who smell: Aaaaargh…c’mon, you are going to the gym, you know you will sweat, can’t you be considerate and use deodorant?!
-
Those who, in an annoying way, tell you how to do your exercise: I am willing to listen to some members that gives free advise on how to get the most out of the exercise. But sometimes there are people that tells you in their own annoying way that their way is the correct way and lecture, and talk about themselves. I had someone commented on me after I did my abs and he said to me, “Well, you will never get a sixpack that way”. And started telling the story of his life. Gosh.
-
Those who (tries to) talk to you when you are doing your sets: I mean, can’t you see me groaning and concentrating, please stop talking to me until I’m done with my set? At least, you can talk to me in between the sets! I had a guy selling insurance at one time while I was stretching. In another occassion, I had one of the Rapid Result Coach trying to have a conversation with me while I was in the middle of pumping the glute machine.
Anyways, I’m sure there are more but these are those that I can think of at the moment, which happened this week.

I think some people are just not ready with this new lifestyle, some of them just want to be part of this hype thing and won’t bother to learn the code etiquettes.
I really hate when people who take my spot during the classes, I’ve placed my towel and drink bottle for a reason, that spot is taken errr

I was trying think of a good translation for kampungan in that context. Loutish perhaps? Oafish? provincial? mmm maybe provincial. Anyway I know the type: somewhat capable of grunts and short interogative phrases but clear conversation is out of the question.
Usually if I feel like going to the gym I lie in bed until the feeling goes away.
Much nicer for me on the golf course…get to hit something.

I would expect nothing else from narcissistic egocentric people who like to exercise with an audience. Also this is jakarta - noticed the rubbish on the streets? Noticed the traffic? Noticed the greed alongside the poverty? Why expect “middle class” people to be any different inside a Gym? Did your membership form require a manners test to be accepted? Or just a credit card?

I can add one more annoying thing… those people who just HAVE to watch TV while exercising, turning the volume out loud! The gym I go to provides a small TV in front of every treadmill and stairmaster, plus on several benches where you can sit and lift weights, do sit-ups etc. I guess it’s good to distract people from their workout and so that they could run for a longer period of time wihout even realising it, but I think it can also bring potential injury if you don’t watch what you’re doing. I wouldn’t want to sprain my ankle on the stairmaster because I was too busy watching Seinfield rerun, for example. And what’s with the loud volume? The gym is a confined space, it’s very very annoying to hear 5 or 6 TV sets competing on who has the loudest noise, each on different channels. Be considerate to others who don’t follow every sinetron on TV or the latest Liga Indonesia soccer match. Put the volume low enough so only you can hear it, or use the provided headset.

Another one: those who are overtly flirty towards customers / fellow gym members. I could tell a long story about personal trainers being so flirty towards their customers, even indicating that they are available for more than just private sessions at the gym. Other gym members think that since you don’t chat with others you are an open target hence they step to the treadmill next to you and in 5 minutes will ask for your phone number, ask to go for a meal after gym together, and spend a weekend together. Unbelievable.

How about those personal trainers who won’t leave you alone and keep offering to train you? They should also provide towels and disinfecting sprays so gym members would clean the machine after they use it.

Aduuuh Parvita…you were surprised by this behaviour??? Come on, it’s a given, goes without saying. I actually think this kind of behaviour is expected in a Jakarta gym!! Hence I only go to the gym when I am on holiday, hotel gym!! At other times I just do my exercise at home while watching TV and do my run in a park (oh yeah…you need a park first in Jakarta I guess!!) I am with Kindred on this one. It seems impossible enough for Jakartans to put the rubbish in the bin, let alone to behave in a gym!!!

@Lisa: maybe I’m too naive but I would’ve expect that those who can affort going to these gyms are educated enough. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. You should come out to the gym, it is fun to meet people outside our routine. You must have good discipline exercising at home; I just can’t commit to that.
@Anita: yes, just like bargirls that provide services after working hours, there are also personal trainers that can be booked for extra services. I can understand that considering those protein drinks, steroids and hormon shots are pretty damn expensive, let alone they have to eat lots of meat and chicken, not tempe and tahu for their protein source to keep their body in shape.

Mbak Parvita…yg punya duit itu duitnya dapet darimana. Duit kaget yah behaviour kaget. so many kampungan rich people as you know laaa…but you’re right…it takes a discipline, and i guess i am lucky to have a partner who also encourages me to do so. I find gyms smell, dirty, and too alpha male - if you know what i mean. See, that’s the problem in Jkt, there’s hardly any parks. I do exercise outside P, and really like it, you know, the fresh air, the warm sun, the freshly cut grass…

those who don’t share the machine are supposed to be expelled from the gym membership. they are the most annoying people ever! There’s this old guy in my gym who’d hog on the chest-press…like forever.
And even more annoying when these guys are making phone calls during the supposedly-1-minute rest between sets.
they need to be trained before joining them gym

i think you go to my gym… or are all gyms here have annoying B/SOB members?
