SHELL Notice: Encouraging Whole Family on Motorcycles?
This has been a while ago, but I was given a pamflet and also spotted a notice while filling in gas in SHELL gas station. I forgot which one, (definetely the one at the south) but I was surprised that even SHELL, as a major oil company, encourages having the whole family on the motorcycle.
Here is the notice, have you seen this?
It basically says (the translation for the upper part): “Please let you and your children get off the bike when filling in the tank”.
So, SHELL thinks that having kids on the bike like the notice is OK. Sort of encouraging people to do this acrobatic thing. Wonder what their HSE think about and what their HSE value. Without helmets also. A big, multinational company encourages people to do something that should be against the law.
The fact is, I am nervous with these bikers. Motorcycles are designed for 2 people.
What you see around Jakarta is, sometimes there are three adults. Often you see 5 people: Dad, Mom, two kids and a baby. This is a real life acrobat, I think. How do they keep the balance? It is really dangerous, and it should be against the law for children’s safety. I know you will say, “I’m surprised that you are surprised”. But I’m surprised people take this as a default and nobody is thinking or posting about it, let alone the DPR to come up with children’s safety law. People only say, “Look at that”, pointing at a whole family on the bike.
It is nervous enough to drive in Jakarta with the wreckless motorcyclists, let alone those who have kids on it. Just one rock is enough to get them imbalanced and..voila…life time regrets. And these children do not have any rights to say, “No, Dad, that’s dangerous, I prefer bus”. What’s scary is that, during Idul Fitri, they can ride like this for 5 and more hours to reach their kampungs. I should take picture of these acrobatic bike riders and put it in a dedicated album on my facebook.
Well, I’m surprised SHELL encourages this and come up with this kind of notice. Poor PR job, I would say.

Whoa Vit, I’m surprised too! Will pass your post to Shell in Aberdeen, see what they think. ESPECIALLY sine Shell always, always put safety above everything.

Please do. And actually, there should be a law prohibiting this kind of motorcycle abuse.

In Bali, I’ve seen huge posters from one of the motorbike manufacturers (I forgot which one: Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki.. one of them lah). It boasted the features of their newly released vehicle. From Denpasar to Singaraja, only xx hours! Consuming only xx liters of gasoline! Can run up to XX km/hour! And with FOUR passangers! The last bit made me laugh, cos motorbikes are made only for two. Is the manufacturer actually saying it’s acceptable to ride four people in one bike? But what can you do when money’s tight and public transportation is unreliable? What’s amazing is that they never pause to think how dangerous it is of what might happen…. guess they can’t afford to do that too.

well, they probably already found the new definition for “safety” here in Indonesia.
Secara orang kita kan sakti-sakti gitu

guess what…only the father is important, the others don’t wear any helmets, it is ‘ok’ if they die.

This is LOSE-LOSE (not Win-Win) situation. What makes something successful, you have to assimilate to the local habit. You’re being strict you’ll be fu*^ed. So I think the reason behind Shell put that kind of graph was not to encourage the bikers to go with 10 people on their bike but, considering the situation, when it happens (the bikers with 10 passenger) this is what they should do..bla bla bla.
It’s not their job (shell, conoco, bp whatever) to encourage people to do safe habit, but, it is their job to perform their work safely. How? By making procedure (like the one on graph) if you want to refuel your bike, for example.
It’s not Europe or US, it’s Indonesia for heaven sake, so please adjust your lifestyle and way of thinking, for only a little bit.
