alow, i got a little confused as you dont believe in hadith. then how do you do your daily prayer? or you just dont do, as it is not mentioned how to do that in Quran.
i am a moslem and believe (selected) hadith
November 21, 2007 at 7:25 am
Hi Cokki, like how it was told in the Qur’an: like Muhammad and the people before him.
May 13, 2009 at 9:27 am
that is still confusing. you only follow qur’an?
June 20, 2009 at 7:27 am
Yes. Why is it confusing that I follow the book only? If you are moslem, you have to follow qur’an and the books before. Read the beginning of Al Baqarah.
November 22, 2007 at 2:13 pm
Hi, i’m just dropped in from other blog. Nice blog!
Interesting question from cokki, interesting answer from you.
Following questions would be:
Q:How did you know that you pray like Muhammad?
A: From my parent or (from my teachers).
Q: How did then your parent or teachers know?
A: From their parent
Q: How did then their parent know?
….
Actually that’s how selected hadith were delivered to us. Stories, history etc. about Muhammad were delivered to us.. by selected hadith. So there’s no reason not to believe to some hadith. In fact, you already do.
November 22, 2007 at 2:22 pm
Thanks, Satria, for stopping by. I just believe in the Qur’an, it is already complete and doesn’t need to be completed. You can post more of your thoughts in the “Why People don’t read the Qur’an”.
May 13, 2009 at 9:28 am
But the hadith are there to show the practical application of qur’an. That is why the question on how do you pray keeps coming up. Because it is from the hadith that we know exactly when and how. In the qur’an it often says to worship Allah in the day and night. But not specific. Sometimes things aren’t specific, and that is where the hadith come into help us out. And the scholars with deep understanding have compiled it all in to what we know as the shari’a.

Hi
I am a gynecologist and sexologist from Middle East. I read many of of your posting and find it so many interesting things and ideas. do u have any postings or links that can explain the situation of sexuality and women issues in your part of the world. I do think that the new generation of muslims like you can improve the way we live and remove many of the old ideas and taboos.
January 4, 2008 at 7:42 am
@Sam: I don’t know any specific link but try clicking on Indonesia Matters, maybe you can find things in there. It is on my blogroll.

How are you Parvita?
I am a novelist in the United States and I’ve written a novel which features a foul-mouthed Indonesian punk rock/call girl and I needed some help with the language. I originally had her speaking the Javan dialect, but recently I had an Indonesian girl tell me that most people over there curse in Bahasa. The character in the novel, Deborah, was born in Jakarta and moved here when she was 10. I’m not sure which language would be more appropriate for her to speak, especially for hurling insults. The girl I was speaking with isn’t the right person to help me. I was wondering if you would help me out with this. I will send you a page or two of sayings, some randy, some not, and I want to see that I am getting this right. If you are interested, please let me know. It could be enlightening and fun for both of us.
Thanks and Happy New Year!

Work is killing me, Anita! The Busy Brain is divided! I’ve got some in my draft, just waiting for the right time to publish it. Thanks for reminding, Darling (pitty we didn’t meet when you were here).
April 2, 2008 at 3:09 am
Hi Parvita, if my memory works fine, you went to the US and got your degree there, right? Can I list you in Indonesian Expatriates Forum. I initiate the site for all of us who live abroad, or about to, or have lived at some point. Let me know if it’s ok. Hope your work doesn’t kill you, you should go out for R&R at EP!
April 2, 2008 at 7:19 am
Sure you can.
May 21, 2008 at 4:27 pm
Interesting thoughts on your blog. You seem to be different from the kind of people I usually meet. Not necessarily better or verse, but different- certainly- not that you are asking from a certificate from a stranger. Your blog seems to be a sort of personal statement- totally focused on your own life. Possibly happy, or confused. Anyway felt good to have visited your page

Hi! My name is Jacopo.
I am a 39 years old surfer and a scuba diver from Italy.
Actually I am a PADI DM, but I never worked as a DM before, I do scuba diving just for fun, not for business.
I really would love to have your opinion…..which is the best place to dive right now in Indonesia? I live 9 months a year in Bali, since 2002, and every summer many friends of mine from Milano (Italy) come here to visit me.
This year I want to organize a little scuba-diving tour and I wanted to bring my friends to Pulau Weh……but after reading your post………….
Any other suggestion?
thanks a lot for your time!

Hey Parvita. You do have to follow the Qur’an of course. But then you can’t get everything from Qur’an. This is why we have to turn to the Prophet (saw) to see how he lived his life, and then after him the sahabah, to know what to do. ie. how to implement Qur’an.
You cannot know how to pray, and when exactly without the Sunnah of Nabi Muhammad. You cannot know how to make wudu, how to make ghusl, which hand to eat with, the indepths of freemixing between men and women, and all the du’as there are say for entering masjid or to know to say basmallah before you eat your food without looking to the Sunnah of Nabi Muhammad. And to do that you need the Ahadith.
That is why like others, I am shocked that you do not look to it, that is why the question of, how do you pray? comes in as you cannot know these things from the Qur’an. But what is clear in the Qur’an are other things like not alcohol, that associating anyone with allah is haram, ie shirik. And that wearing the hijab and the jilbab is fard.

Hai, saya salut dengan karir anda.
Hi, I salute your career
July 12, 2009 at 7:44 am
Thank you for visiting my blog. It would be great for this blog if you can share what the ‘anak santri’ learn from their madrasahs and your wise view about Islam. I did get Islamic teachings in school, parents, universities, gatherings, pengajian, etc. But I am not a good Indonesian student: i.e., my brain is too busy questioning!
(translation: terimakasih sudah mengunjungi blog saya. Tetapi saya bukan murid Indonesia yang baik, i.e. otak saya terlalu sibuk bertanya!)

Mungkin lebih berkenan bila saya pakai jilbab?
(is it better if I wear a jilbab?)
